12 Year Sustainable Cargo Delivery Rider
It’s truly the end of an era for Penny, our Zedify Cambridge rider and employee of Outspoken Logistics (Zedify’s parent company). For more than 12 glorious years, Penny has ridden for us day in and day out, through rain and shine, season after season… through the advent of electric bikes and new technologies, huge team growth, and so much more.
Penny is retiring and will shortly be off to the North Norfolk coast, but we were lucky enough to catch up with her a couple of days ago.
Bex: Hey Penny. Thanks so much for meeting with me today. It’s so sad to see you go!
Penny: Hey Bex. Great to chat to you again.
Bex: So, Penny. Could you tell me, first of all, a little about the changes you’ve seen at Zedify over the last 12 years?
Penny: Well, of course, it’d be switching to electric bikes. Back when I started, it was just delivery by pedal power. And then I’d add getting the big contracts in from people like Freddie’s Flowers, etc, to move more into being last mile delivery specialists.
Bex: Ah yes – such an exciting thing to be a part of. Did you have a favourite part of doing the day-to-day deliveries?
Penny: I really did like all of it! It’s just so nice to be able to cycle around every day.
Bex: Are there any particularly memorable moments that stick out over the last 12 years? Any people you’ve met, places you’ve been, etc?
Penny: Ooh. I’d have to say this very early memory… When I had my very first time shadowing the other couriers, Rob King (Zedify CEO and co-founder) was interviewing at the time. He said to Tim (Cambridge hub staff) three times, “if Penny can’t keep up, best just carry on delivering.” Tim looked at his watch, we were half an hour ahead… and the rest is history! Great to laugh about at the time and still now.
Bex: I bet Rob will love hearing that one. So, Penny. If we wanted to get to know a bit more about you as a person, could you tell us a bit about what makes you ‘you’?
Penny: I love my dogs, I love watching cricket… I actually used to play cricket many years ago – I was the opening bowler for Cambridge Ladies! I also have a golden labrador called Bailey who has had a total hip replacement… and a black labrador Abbie. Both are rescue dogs and have their issues, but we love them nevertheless.
Bex: From one dog owner and lover to another – I get it. So what are your plans for retirement Penny?!
Penny: In two weeks time I’m moving up to North Norfolk coast. We visit a lot and go up to that area 4 or 5 times a year. It will be great.
Bex: Sounds amazing. So many dog friendly beaches there too. Any final comments on your Zedify experience?
Penny: It’s just been a very lovely company to work for.
If I’ve had any issues with the bike or similar, the team have always accommodated me without any hassle – same for if I’ve wanted time off or anything like that.
It’s been great.
A note from Richard Barker, part of the management team at the Zedify Cambridge depot:
“Penny’s been a real legend and we’ll miss her terribly. She really is a ray of sunshine everyday.”
Thank you Penny, and from all the Outspoken and Zedify team – we hope you enjoy your retirement in gorgeous Norfolk.
