Let’s explain: who are Gipsy Hill?

Gipsy Hill are a South London based brewery with sustainability at their core. Everything they do is led by ‘improving quality, pushing innovation and engaging with the community’.

The business has now been going for 10 years, growing from just the two founders, Charlie and Sam, to 34 employees, a taproom that has recently doubled in size and 16740HL of craft beer brewed. Delicious.

Where do Zedify come in to their journey?

Enter Trail – Gipsy Hill’s offset-free carbon-negative pale ale – and the reason why the business needed to do something differently.

(Wondering why is offsetting not so great? Learn more on our other blog, here.)

Trail pale ale

It’s not just the rhyming to be appreciated about this new drink. To ensure that Trail is the real green deal, Gipsy Hill had to overhaul almost their entire process to ensure each can remained carbon-negative from cradle to grave.

Here’s how they did it:

Packaging – the team replaced their cardboard boxes (resource heavy and energy intensive to recycle) with reusable crates, ready to stand the test of time and be delivered and collected time and time again.

Deliveries –  Of course, there’s no use worrying about the packaging that’s going to get the cans to the store unless you’ve got an equally sustainable method to get them there in the first place.

Typical parcel deliveries are done by diesel vans, which release huge quantities of NOx, CO2 and PM2.5 every time they travel. Not only are these gases harmful for the environment – they’re also harmful to human health.

Zedify is proud to support Gipsy Hill in their mission by couriering all orders from the brewery to store on our electric cargo bikes. We’re on a mission to shift the norm and roll out a new model for urban logistics, one that’s tightly aligned with a net zero future, so we were thrilled when Gipsy Hill wanted to partner with us in the same sentiment.

Together, we supply the following Waitrose stores completely carbon-neutrally (zero emission at the tailpipe, on sleek electric cargo bikes):

Why us, and why cargo bikes?

Using cargo bikes allows Gipsy Hill to save 98% more carbon than compared to a standard diesel van.

Because of embodied emissions, opting for cargo bikes over electric vans means that Gipsy Hill are also saving over 96% of the amount of carbon that would’ve been released had they used electric vans too.

To put that into perspective, here’s a quick fact. If just 7.5% of Britain’s diesel van fleet switched to cargo bikes, more carbon would be prevented than if we ceased ALL domestic aviation. Small commitments really do lead to radical change.

Thanks for your interest in using Zedify. At the moment, we‘re just for businesses and can’t deliver one-off parcels for individuals. Sorry about that.
